The District of Columbia requires all drivers to carry a minimum amount of liability insurance. You will not be able to register a vehicle in DC without proper proof of insurance. If a driver is pulled over by a law enforcement official in DC, they must provide their license, registration and proof of insurance. If proof of insurance is not provided the registration tags will be suspended.

DC - SR22 and Proof of Financial Responsibility

When a driver is asked to give proof of financial responsibility, they are required to produce a document issued by their insurance company that includes the name of the insurance company, a policy number and the length of coverage. Depending on the situation, an SR22 certificate may also be a required.
